What are the goals of the Scientist Spotlights Partnership Program?

1. Engage high school students as authors of Scientist Spotlights to promote their science identity, enhance their interest in biomedical science careers, and identify relevant career role models.

2. Engage high school teachers in partnerships with undergraduate mentors to support the authoring process and in professional development to optimize Scientist Spotlight implementation.

3. Assess the impacts of co-authoring Scientist Spotlights on high school students’ relatability to scientists, science identity, and interest in biomedical science careers.

What are the structure and expectations of the program?

– Teachers will organize multiple teams of high school student pairs to co-author Scientist Spotlights for a peer-reviewed, online database. (See sample Scientist Spotlight assignments co-authored by high school students in Fall 2025.)

– Teachers will partner with multiple undergraduate science students to support student teams in the process over Zoom.

So the program works well with teachers’ school scheduling, teachers will participate over the Fall term in EITHER…

– MODEL A: offer an extracurricular program with a small group of high school students who will meet before, during, or after school hours  – OR –

– MODEL B: embed the program as a whole class activity integrated with your curriculum in one of your classes.

– Teachers will collaborate to collect evidence from their students before and after co-authoring Scientist Spotlights.
